Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras was activated from the 10-day injured list on Sunday and was listed to bat cleanup in the finale of the club's series against the Kansas City Royals. The move came before the last game of the series and returned him to the middle of the Boston order.

The activation restores Contreras to the active roster, which is what makes a player eligible for selection again. He plays first base, and he was listed to hit cleanup rather than lower down the order, indicating he is expected to carry his usual role rather than a reduced one on his first day back.

For Boston, the roster move ends the stretch in which first base had to be covered without him. Contreras is a regular at the position, and having him back in the cleanup slot restores the shape of a lineup that had been missing a middle-of-the-order bat.

It also removes one variable from the club's late-season planning. In the closing weeks of a campaign, teams manage workloads and lineups game by game, and a returning everyday player simplifies those decisions.

  • The Red Sox have not detailed the injury that kept Contreras out, or said how long he had been sidelined.
  • No corresponding roster move has been disclosed to open a place on the active roster.
  • It has not been stated whether he will play every day immediately or be eased back in.
  • Whether he keeps the cleanup spot beyond the Kansas City series is also unstated.

What happens next

The first indication of how Boston intends to use him will come in the games that follow the Kansas City series, when the lineup cards show whether he stays in the cleanup spot. The roster decisions taken over the same period will show whether the club treats the activation as a full return. Neither has been set out in advance.

The series finale against Kansas City is his first scheduled appearance since the activation. Boston has not said how it will divide time at first base once the series is over.

Contreras is an established major-league first baseman, and his availability for the closing weeks of the season matters to a Boston side that has been without him. Whether the return changes the club's results is a question only the games can answer.
