What Horner has said

Horner suggested the treatment he received on leaving was harsher than what he sees elsewhere in the sport. Not every team behaves the same way, he said, adding that rivals do not show "the same brutality as when I left". The comparison points at how his own exit was handled rather than at results or resources.

He also set out the personal cost. Horner said he had questioned his purpose in life and had dealt with panic attacks, and described the period in terms of the pain of being sacked. He is 52.

His time at Red Bull spanned roughly two decades, during which the team became a powerhouse of Formula 1. He was removed from the team he had led, an outcome he describes as a sacking. That length of tenure is the backdrop to his complaint: a long build finished in a manner he regards as unusually harsh.

Why the account matters

Panic attacks rarely feature in Formula 1's public conversation, which makes their inclusion in his account notable. Horner presents them as part of the aftermath, alongside the questions he says he asked himself about his purpose.

Departures are also one of the few areas of the sport that teams control almost entirely, and a long-serving leader rarely gives his own version of one. Horner's comparison with other teams invites scrutiny of a period Red Bull has not described publicly. It raises, too, a question he does not answer: whether he wants to work in the sport again.

What is not yet known

The timing of his exit and the terms on which he left have not been made public. No settlement or exit agreement has been disclosed. Red Bull have not responded publicly to his account of how the departure was handled.

It is also unclear what Horner does next. He has not said whether he wants another role in Formula 1. Whether Red Bull respond, and whether Horner says more, are the open threads.
