The Formula 1 driver is reported to be filling a vacant seat at the series finale after two of his team's regular drivers were committed to a rescheduled endurance round in Barcelona.
Max Verstappen is set to make his debut in GT World Challenge Europe at the Portimao season finale this weekend, driving for Verstappen Racing. The Formula 1 driver is reported to be taking the seat himself because two of the team's regular drivers, Daniel Juncadella and Jules Gounon, are racing elsewhere. It would be his first appearance in the series.

Why Verstappen is filling in
Juncadella and Gounon are competing at the World Endurance Championship round in Barcelona, a fixture that has been rescheduled to replace the cancelled Qatar race. That commitment leaves the team without its usual line-up for the closing round of the GT World Challenge Europe season.
No details of the entry have been made public beyond the driver himself. Which car he would drive, who would share it with him and how much of the weekend's running he would take on are all unanswered. Verstappen Racing has not publicly confirmed the arrangement.
What the Portimao finale is
Steffen Prößdorf · CC BY-SA 4.0Portimao stages the last round of the GT World Challenge Europe season. A finale settles championships, so the closing weekend already matters to the teams still in contention. Adding a Formula 1 driver to the grid would put a far larger audience on that final round than it would normally attract.
For Verstappen the calculation is different. Such a drive would place him against specialists in a form of racing with its own rhythm and its own way of running a weekend, and it would do so without any bearing on his Formula 1 season. Whether it becomes more than a single appearance is a question nobody involved has answered.
What happens next
Liauzh · CC BY-SA 4.0Confirmation is the next step, and the weekend's timetable is short. Practice and qualifying come before the race, leaving little room for a driver new to a championship to settle into the car. That constraint would apply to anyone in this position, and it is why a strong result in such circumstances tends to be treated as notable rather than routine.
The schedule clash behind it
The cause of the vacancy is a calendar collision rather than anything to do with the GT championship. The World Endurance Championship lost its Qatar round and gained a Barcelona round in its place, which took two of Verstappen Racing's regular drivers out of the Portimao weekend. Driver-sharing between GT racing and endurance programmes is common, and it leaves line-ups exposed to late changes in another series' calendar.
