Piastri finishes eighth in Madrid as Norris takes another podium

The damage was done on the opening lap, and it proved decisive. Piastri crossed the line eighth, behind the Alpine of Franco Colapinto, while the other McLaren finished on the podium. It was an afternoon that slipped away before it had properly begun.

McLaren's pace was not the problem

The car had the pace to fight for the win in Madrid, and Norris's podium is the evidence of it. The team converted that speed with only one of its two drivers, which is where the weekend's cost sits. A first-lap incident is cheap to cause and expensive to absorb.

Norris's result extends a run of front-running finishes, while Piastri's eighth place is one he will want to put behind him quickly. The two McLaren drivers left Madrid with very different afternoons to review.

Results are not lost by pace alone. A lap-one incident costs the same as a slow car, and Piastri's afternoon falls into that category. His own description of it — painful — is a fair summary of a day when the machinery was good enough for considerably more.

McLaren will go back over the opening lap and take whatever it learns into the next round. The speed shown in Madrid is not in question; what the team will want is both cars in a position to use it. For Piastri, the target is straightforward: a clean start and a race run from the front.

Piastri's assessment of Madrid is unlikely to be a fond one. Eighth place, behind an Alpine, with a team mate on the podium, is a blunt summary of a weekend that had promised a great deal more.
