Brentford's unbeaten Premier League start survives a trip to Villa Park, where the hosts are still chasing a first home win.
Hameltion · CC BY-SA 4.0Aston Villa's wait for a home win goes on after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Brentford at Villa Park at the weekend, Kristoffer Ajer scoring the equaliser. The result keeps Brentford unbeaten in the Premier League this season and leaves Villa still searching for a victory in front of their own supporters.
The goals arrived in two quick exchanges. Brentford went ahead through Yehor Yarmolyuk, a goal that came after Jaidon Anthony closed down Tyrone Mings, and Villa responded inside 88 seconds when Nicolas Jackson equalised. Villa then moved in front when John McGinn's shot went in off Ajer's calf, only for the defender to make it 2-2 two minutes later, his effort clipping Victor Lindelöf on its way through.

Ajer at both ends
Like tears in rain · CC BY-SA 4.0It was a busy afternoon for Ajer. He turned a McGinn strike past his own goalkeeper, then carried the ball into the Villa area, held three defenders at a distance and finished for the equaliser. Late in the game he was booked for questioning a decision by the referee, Craig Pawson.
What the draw means for Brentford
Like tears in rain · CC BY-SA 4.0Brentford's unbeaten league record is intact. They took the lead, were pegged back, fell behind to a deflected goal and levelled again, so the point reflects a side that kept answering the game's swings. Whether that run can survive the weeks ahead is now the central question around their season.
Villa's wait for a home win
For Villa, the frustration is where the points went missing rather than how they played. They scored twice, led at 2-1 when McGinn's shot deflected in, and held that advantage for two minutes before Ajer levelled. The home win they are chasing did not arrive, and the club has made no public comment on the outcome.
What is not yet known
Neither club has commented on the match. No injury information has been issued for either side, and there has been no explanation of the decision Ajer questioned before his booking. It is also unclear how far back Villa's run without a home win stretches, or how much of it belongs to this campaign alone.
For Villa, the next home fixture is the next chance to end the sequence. Brentford, meanwhile, will spend the coming week protecting a record that a draw at Villa Park has done nothing to damage.
