Phil Murray calls for football agents to be barred from recruiting under-18s

Phil Murray has called for agents to be banned from recruiting footballers under the age of 18, arguing that the odds facing children signed by top-flight clubs are so long that families should think again before committing to them. The call came in a letter published on 21 September.

His argument starts with arithmetic. That contrast, the letter says, should be a reality check for the parents and guardians of every aspiring young athlete.

Both strands of the coverage point the same way in the letter's reading. A teenager good enough to draw a comparison with Lamine Yamal attracts attention and expectation; the ordinary outcome for a child who signs early is a dismissal in his mid-teens.

The measure proposed is aimed at agents rather than at clubs. Murray frames a prohibition on agents recruiting under-18s as a way of reducing the risks to young players, leaving clubs' own recruitment of children where it stands. How such a ban would be enforced, and by whom, has not been set out.
