Europe are chasing the trophy they lost to the United States two years ago, and they need 14½ points to win it. To be level at this stage is an achievement in itself; the harder question is where the remaining points will come from.

Day two finished level on the scoreboard, and the manner of it will sting. Kupcho's finish came as the light was closing in and Europe were pressing for a lead that would have changed the shape of the final day.

Why the Hull and Woad pairing is being questioned

Anna Nordqvist, the Europe captain, has used Charley Hull and Lottie Woad together during the team sessions, and the combination has returned only a meagre contribution to the score. That return is the anomaly of this contest. Europe have kept pace with the United States largely without their star duo.

If Europe fall short of 14½ points, the decision to pair them is likely to be revisited. The pairing is one factor among many — a match level after two days is not the work of a single selection — but captaincy is judged on outcomes, and the return from two of Europe's leading players will be part of that judgement.
