The former McLaren F1 junior beat Trident's Freddie Slater to the 2026 crown at the Madring after a summer in which the two had pulled clear of the rest of the field.
Ank Kumar · CC BY-SA 4.0Ugo Ugochukwu has won the 2026 Formula 3 championship, sealing the title on Sunday at the Madring. The Campos Racing driver, a former McLaren F1 junior, went into the weekend as a dark horse rather than the favourite.
The driver he beat to it was Trident's Freddie Slater. The pair had separated themselves from the rest of the field over the summer, and it was their shared habit of scoring in feature races that turned the championship into a straight contest between two drivers.

How the title fight took shape
emperornie · CC BY-SA 2.0Slater's case was built early. Across the first seven rounds of the season, up to the summer break, he finished six feature races on the podium, a run of repeat finishes that made him the benchmark through the middle of the year.
Ugochukwu's route ran through the same races. The consistency that carried Slater to the front of the championship also kept Ugochukwu in range of him, and the two were still the only realistic contenders for the crown by the time the season resumed.
Slater's podium sequence in those seven rounds was the standout statistic of the opening phase, and it framed the second half of the year as a chase rather than an open fight.
Why the championship matters
Rundvald · CC BY-SA 4.0Ugochukwu's title comes after his time as a McLaren F1 junior, and it sits alongside a Formula 3 campaign run with Campos Racing. A junior championship of this kind is the result that shapes what a driver is offered next.
For Slater, the weekend ends without the title, after a season in which six podium finishes from the first seven feature races had made him the leading contender going into the summer break.
What is not yet known
No announcement has been made about what Ugochukwu does next. His 2027 programme has not been confirmed and no team has publicly set out a seat for him, so what the title changes about his career path remains open.
The margin by which the championship was decided has not been disclosed, and neither Campos Racing nor Trident has commented publicly on the outcome. McLaren's current relationship with Ugochukwu, beyond his earlier spell in its junior programme, has also not been set out.
