Harry Kane becomes Bayern Munich's seventh-highest scorer while topping Tottenham's list

The forward's place on two clubs' all-time top-10 charts mirrors Jimmy Greaves, who is seventh at Chelsea as well as Tottenham — and revives the question of who else appears on more than two.

Harry Kane is Bayern Munich's seventh-highest scorer of all time and Tottenham Hotspur's leading scorer, which places him on the all-time top-10 charts of two clubs at once. The double was set out in a football knowledge column published on 21 October, and it prompted a broader question: how many players appear in the top 10 for two clubs, and has anyone done it for three?

The Jimmy Greaves parallel

Kane reached the top of Tottenham's list by passing Jimmy Greaves, the previous holder of that record. Greaves is also Chelsea's seventh-highest scorer of all time — the same rung Kane now occupies at Bayern. Two players, decades apart, each with a prominent place on the charts of two clubs, one of them Tottenham.

That symmetry is what turns a straightforward record into a puzzle. If the seventh-highest scorer at one club can also be the seventh-highest at another, the overlap between these lists may be wider than it first appears.

Players named on two clubs' lists

The common thread among those names is a forward who scored heavily at more than one club, usually across a long career and often either side of a move between two large sides. Reaching a club's top 10 once is rare in itself; doing it twice suggests both durability and a transfer that did not interrupt the output.

These charts are not built to a shared standard. Which competitions count towards a club's list, and when that list was last updated, is not set out, so any answer depends on the method used. A placing is also a moving target: a current player's position on a running chart changes with every season he spends at the club.

What is not yet known

No player has been identified as appearing on three or more clubs' all-time top-10 charts. The goal totals behind each placing have not been given, and neither has the date on which each list was compiled. Kane's exact tallies at Bayern and Tottenham are also unstated, and neither club has commented on the records.

What happens next

Kane's Bayern total will keep moving for as long as he is at the club, and every goal shifts the chart beneath him. The wider question — whether anyone has scored enough, for long enough, to sit in the top 10 at three clubs — stays open until an example is produced.
