The oldest surviving football season ticket in the world, a Burnley card for the 1884-85 season kept at Turf Moor, granted its bearer access to every Burnley home game that year and predates the Football League by four years. All of its fixtures were against east Lancashire neighbours, and its terms were uncompromising: "This card is not transferable. Any member violating this rule will be at once expelled from the club."

What is not yet known

United have not said how many of the 685 holders have appealed, whether any of the tickets have been reinstated, or what a supporter who loses a seat can expect in return. There is no confirmed value for the seats involved, no detail on how the club identified the alleged resales, and no indication of whether similar checks will run again in future seasons.

What happens next turns on two unanswered questions: whether the 685 accept the club's decision or escalate their protest, and whether other clubs adopt the same approach to policing resale. A voided ticket no longer grants admission, and for now that is the one thing the holders know for certain.
