What Olid set out to do

The ambition is easy to state and hard to deliver. Olid's promise was a possession game — United with the ball, dictating the tempo, attacking rather than responding to whatever the opposition chooses to do. That is the standard against which the side is now being judged, and it is the coach's own standard rather than one imposed from outside.

The difficulty with judging a possession project is that the intention becomes visible long before the execution does. A team can hold the ball for long spells and still fail to turn that control into chances, and possession without penetration invites pressure at the other end. Whether United's problem lies in the players available, in the time new habits need to settle, or in the quality of the opposition is unresolved. That last point is assessment rather than established fact.

The cost of declaring a style

Announcing a way of playing raises the stakes of every match. Opponents know what is coming and can prepare for it, and supporters arrive expecting a particular kind of football. If the ball is not moving forward and the chances are not arriving, the promise itself becomes the criticism. The counter-argument is equally familiar and equally hard to settle quickly: that a change of this size needs a run of games before anyone can judge it fairly.

What is not yet known

Several things remain open. Over what period does Olid expect the approach to take hold? What would the club treat as evidence that it is working? Does the current squad have what a possession game demands, or does the style require changes to it? Those are the questions the coming weeks have to answer, and until they are answered the debate will keep circling.

What happens next

A single match will not settle this. The judgement will come over a longer run of games, and on whether United's spells with the ball start producing chances and results rather than territory alone. Until then, the gap between the football Olid described and the football United are producing remains the story — along with the pressure that comes from having described it so clearly.
