Spain beat England 3-2 at Wembley as Kane misses penalty

England led 2-1 at the interval through Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane after Lamine Yamal's second-minute opener, but the lead went after the break and Mikel Oyarzabal settled it.

Spain beat England 3-2 at Wembley on Saturday, leaving the home side with a defeat at the start of their Nations League campaign. Mikel Oyarzabal scored the goal that decided it, after Lamine Yamal had given Spain a second-minute lead and Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane had turned the match England's way.

Yamal's goal arrived inside two minutes, an early statement from a Spain side reported to hold the world title. England's response came in a surge at the end of the first half, when Gordon and Kane scored to convert a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead.

That advantage did not last the second half. England surrendered it after the interval, and when Kane missed from the penalty spot, Spain made the miss count, with Oyarzabal scoring what proved to be the winner.

Jude Bellingham drove England for long stretches, playing with the freedom and energy that the Wembley crowd responded to. England had positive spells either side of half-time, and the manner of the performance was not one to invite recrimination from their supporters.
